What is Rope Splicing?

Rope splicing is the process of partially untwisting and then intertwining the strands of two ropes or two segments of the same rope to make a semi-permanent connection. It can be used to construct a loop/eye at the end of the rope (a back splice), or to tie two ropes together. Splicing can be done on a variety of ropes, including wire, synthetic, and fiber. There are numerous advantages to using a splice on your rope over other means of accomplishing the same goal.

Splicing allows you to adjust the functionality of your rope products, and there are a variety of options to choose from.

So what form of splicing is best for you? Read below for all the types of hand slicing. What are the types of hand splicing? 

Back Splice: A splice in which the rope’s strands are spliced directly back into the end without making a loop.

Cut splice: A type of splice that creates an eye in the middle of a rope instead of at the end.

Eye splice: To make a permanent loop in the end of a rope, usually for the purpose of attaching it to a fixed spot

Horseshoe splice: A cut splice where the two sides of the loop are of unequal length.

Long splice: a splice without an appreciable increase of circumference that is used when the rope must run over a sheave or through a hole.

Short splice: a splice made by unlaying the rope ends a set distance, combining them so that their strands overlap, then tucking each alternately over and under others multiple times when an increased thickness of the united rope is not desirable.

Side splice: Making a simple back splice in rope is comparable to this procedure. Like back splicing, the three strands of the rope are weaved at 90 degrees into another rope.
