WHY DO WE NEED ISO STANDARDS FOR ENERGY?

Over 1.2 billion people around the world do not have access to electricity, yet world energy production is at its highest ever and is expected to increase by up to 30 % by 2030*. What’s more, the earth is warming at unprecedented rates, largely due to man-made greenhouse gases that are causing havoc to our climate. Increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewables is key to meeting the world’s energy demands while contributing to global targets to reduce carbon emissions.

Energy is the major contributor to climate change, making up 60% of total greenhouse gas emissions.

Out of a total of over 22 000 International Standards, ISO has more than 200 related to energy efficiency and renewables, with many more in development.

Carbon capture and storage

ISO has published a number of standards that facilitate the use of this innovative technology, which consists of extracting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from large stationary sources and injecting them into a geologic storage formation for safe and secure disposal.

Energy management

In addition to ISO 50001 on energy management systems (see Box overleaf), our most widely used energy-related standard, ISO has developed standards on energy performance indicators, the measurement, analysis and verification of energy performance, as well as methodologies for the calculation of energy savings in projects, organizations and regions.

  • ISO/TC 301, Energy management and energy savings 

Environmental management

Alongside ISO 14001 for environmental management, ISO 14064 on the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gases and ISO 14025 on environmental labels and declarations are just some of the many standards that help organizations reduce their environmental impact through smarter energy usage.

Buildings

Energy consumption in buildings accounts for over 20 % of total primary energy use worldwide 1), and up to 40 % in developed economies such as the United States and the EU 2), and it is on the rise. ISO has a number of standards that help make buildings more energy-efficient, covering everything from the design of the whole building to its individual parts. This includes the ISO 52000 family of standards, which takes a holistic approach to improving the energy performance of buildings. It contains a comprehensive method of assessing energy performance as the total primary energy used for heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation and domestic hot water of buildings, thus supporting new technologies and approaches to building design and management.

  • ISO/TC 163, Thermal performance and energy use in the built environment
  • ISO/TC 205, Building environment design

Information Technology

Standards that address the performance of information and communication technology (ICT) and household appliances are key players in reducing energy consumption. The new ISO/IEC 30134 series of standards, developed in conjunction with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), aims to make ICT products more energy-efficient.

  • ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 39, Sustainability for and by information technology

Transportation

New technology is making inroads in reducing the energy consumption and polluting emissions of vehicles, but there is still a long way to go. ISO standards help pave the way for these technologies by providing useful tools to support their development. These include standards such as ISO 16923 and ISO 16924 for the design and operation of stations dispensing compressed and liquefied natural gas to vehicles, ISO 8714 for measuring the reference energy consumption of electric passenger cars, and ISO 23274 for measuring exhaust emissions and fuel consumption in hybrid vehicles. Other related documents feature ISO/TS 19880, a technical specification that recommends the minimum safety characteristics for hydrogen fuelling stations. In addition, the ISO 6469 series provides safety specifications for rechargeable energy storage systems for electric cars.

ISO has standards to increase the performance and effectiveness of machines and equipment, including refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, automation systems, industrial fans, air and gas cleaning equipment and more.

Renewables

ISO has published over 50 standards for solar energy systems and biofuels, namely standards for performance ratings and test methods, solar heating, solar panels and solid biofuels. Future technical work will cover solar thermal collectors and the safety of solid biofuel pellets.

WOMEN OF INDUSTRY, JOSÉE VERRETTE | Tell us about your educational/professional background and your work experience before joining Hercules SLR?

Well, I had two businesses before I joined Hercules SLR—I was worked in armed security for residential and commercial properties.

Eventually, my partner and I sold the security business and I went into a catering business with my boyfriend. The catering industry wasn’t quite for me, and decided it would be better to separate my personal life from my work life. 

I started to think about what I liked doing in my previous jobs, and how I could use that to look for the next role in my career. I realized when I owned my own business I enjoyed taking care of clients and customers the most—So I decided to make a shift to a customer service role, and it’s a perfect fit. I should have done it sooner! 

WOMEN OF INDUSTRY, JOSÉE VERRETTE | Why did you decide to work for Hercules SLR?

I decided I wanted to work for a company that did something industrial, but most of the openings I saw expected you to have a lot of technical experience.

I stumbled across Hercules SLR and they weren’t seeking technical expertise—They had a lot of employees who knew the industry and product well, but were looking for personable employees who could lead with service and pick up the technical information as needed. It was a totally new industry, but I enjoyed it because it was a challenge to learn. 

Another aspect of Hercules SLR which I thought was honestly very cool was CertTracker! I was particularly excited since I was taking on a service role, and CertTracker complements service perfectly.

For example, if a customer calls and asks which equipment they have under-the-hook or when their next inspection is, I’m able to tell them right away and it’s all in one convenient place. 

It makes organization a breeze, too. I can pre-program CertTracker to send reminders to myself and the customer that inspections are approaching, and offer them spots to pre-book (inspections fill up fast!) The client doesn’t have to think about inspections or paperwork—This truly makes Hercules SLR a one-stop-shop! 

WOMEN OF INDUSTRY, JOSÉE VERRETTE | Where have you traveled during your time at Hercules SLR?

So far, I’ve travelled to head office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. When I was hired, there was no Sales Manager here in Ville St-Laurent, so I did my interview with Troy, from head office and Mourad, the Quebec Area Manager.

After I was hired, I travelled to head office for some training.

I’ve travelled quite a bit throughout Quebec during my time with Hercules SLR because I had a large territory to cover—Around 1 1/2 hours from my place. Since last-month actually, my territory has gotten smaller, and now I just cover part of Montreal which doesn’t take me quite as far! 

WOMEN OF INDUSTRY, JOSÉE VERRETTE | What kind of training have you completed at Hercules SLR?

I’ve completed a lot of internal training, something I love that’s available to us at Hercules SLR. I’ve completed the Fundamentals of Rigging course, Sling & Rigging course and Fall Protection training in Montreal with Ame, an Engineer at the Montreal branch. 

When I came for my very first interview, I basically knew that Hercules SLR was a crane company. 

WOMEN OF INDUSTRY, JOSÉE VERRETTE | Is there anywhere that you would like to travel to in the future with Hercules SLR?

You know what? Right now, I enjoy being here in Ville St-Laurent! 

WOMEN OF INDUSTRY, JOSÉE VERRETTE | What’s something you’re most proud to have accomplished in your career at Hercules SLR?

Well, when I first arrived at Hercules SLR the branches team had gotten smaller, which made it difficult to complete as much service as the branch was used to. 

When I started making calls, I would tell prospective clients “Just try me—The worst thing that happens is you don’t like the service, but if you do, we’ll continue!” 

A big success for me was a client that had chosen to have their service done by a different company—Which I saw as a challenge. I love a challenge! I offered to provide them service, and made sure to check-in with them and track their progress. Eventually, our branch was able to do their under-the-hook inspections and supply them slings. 

WOMEN OF INDUSTRY, JOSÉE VERRETTE | What’s something you love about the securing, lifting and rigging industry?

It might seem funny, but I realized I enjoyed an industrial environment while operating my armed security company. There, we would install the trim-wiring in houses—When you purchase a new house, it contains all the wiring for an alarm system and you install it, so we worked alongside workers from the construction industry.

I love strapping on my hard hat and steel toes, and working alongside so many people with tons of technical knowledge—I learn something new in the securing, lifting and rigging industry everyday! 

WOMEN OF INDUSTRY, JOSÉE VERRETTE | Give us some advice for young people who work, or want to work in an industrial environment:

I think experience in sales is a huge asset for working in this industry, and my role in particular. Here in Ville St-Laurent, I have a variety of roles day-to-day—From being on the road visiting clients, to working in my office, I love the freedom my role at Hercules SLR gives me. Sales experience helps you tremendously with customer service.

It allows you to learn the technical knowledge and deliver excellent valued, customer service. For example, I’ve worked with many crane technicians that have a lot of technical knowledge, but don’t always want to transition into sales. If you already have experience delivering great service and are eager to learn, you can go far in an industrial environment.

3M FALL PROTECTION | WHY IS FALL PREVENTION IMPORTANT? 

In Canada, every year over 14,000 workers are injured due to falls and over 27,000 workers are injured due to dropped objects like hammers, cell phones and work-radios—These are just the recorded incidents. 

Fall protection for all kinds of workers should include the right kind of PPE for the kind of work you do, but prevention plans, rescue & retrieval plans and tool fall protection equipment, plans and risk assessment measures. 

3M FALL PROTECTION FOR TOOLS | STOP THE DROP

It can be easy to underestimate the impact of slips and falls—It can be even easier to underestimate the impact of dropped tools and equipment, so it’s important to take preventative steps to eliminate the risk of injury. 

Often, tools fall from heights due to poor risk assessment & planning, human error, poorly stored tools and fixtures & fittings on-site that have failed. Since tools are often dropped by accident, focus should be on preventing these incidents from happening at all.

Tool fall protection normally focuses on secondary protective measures, like safety nets and toe boards, but it’s rare that tool fall protection plans employ a primary system to prevent drops. These precautions are often taken after an accident or injury occurs. 

WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE DOES A DROPPED TOOL DO? 

There are two main kinds of incidents when tools fall—These are direct impact and deflection. Direct impact injuries happen when the dropped object hits you directly on the head, and deflection happens when the tool bounces off another surface and strikes you. 

Let’s imagine a scenario—You’re working at heights, 200-feet (or 6-metres) above ground on scaffolding. You stop to check something, when your foot nudges the tape measure and it slides out and falls to the ground. 200-feet below. Even though the tape measure only weighs about 1.5lbs, it hits with a force of 3,750lbs. To put that in perspective, a hippo’s average weight is 3,300-4000lbs. 

This happened to a worker in New Jersey, who was delivering sheet metal to a work site when he was killed by a falling tape measure. Falling objects pose risk to the worker who drops it too, since the knee-jerk reaction is often to reach out and try to catch it which could cause you to slip and fall. 

Fall protection protects you from falls, while tool fall protection is designed to save others. We’ve covered comfortable fall protection equipment on the blog before and that it’s important to remember a safety harness isn’t a one-size fits all solution. Tool fall protection is the same.

Many workers find tool fall protection distractive and obtrusive—This is why it’s important to select a drop prevention system that’s comfortable and reasonable for workers to use.

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGGING TIP #1 | always check for damaged cablesentertainment industry rigging, check cables, hercules securing, lifting & rigging

Before you plug it in or switch it on, always check for damaged cables. It only takes a few seconds to make sure things are safe, but it takes a lot longer to heal from electrical burns. Always assume there could be a hazard.

Keep up with frequent and periodic inspections of your rigging and hoists. You can find details on what is required for frequent and periodic inspections in your Lodestar Manual, as well as in the ANSI E1.6-2-2013 standard.

 

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGGING TIP #3 | inspect your rigging before and after every useentertainment industry rigging safety, check cables, hercules securing, lifting & rigging

Like many riggers, synthetic slings are super strong, but also very sensitive to being rubbed the wrong way. Always take a moment to inspect your rigging before and after use. The scuff mark on this sling was an indication to examine for other damage.

If you can see the core material, then it is time to retire the sling. Sling inspections are 50% visual and 50% tactile.

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGGING TIP #4 | before getting into entertainment industry rigging safety, check cables, hercules securing, lifting & rigginga high-reach, or any other aerial work platform, take a few minutes to do a pre-operational inspection of equipment

Working safely at height requires constant attention to detail.

Before getting into a high reach, or any type of aerial work platform, take a few minutes to do a pre-operational inspection of the equipment. Whether the damage in these pictures occurred from corrosion or a single incident, it is an indicator that there may be other unseen problems with this machine. 

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGGING TIP #5 | look out for those who can’t do so for themselves entertainment industry rigging safety, check cables, hercules securing, lifting & rigging

Some days you never know what nature is going to put in your path. While our own safety is paramount, it is also important to look out for those who cannot do so for themselves. Be nice to our little furry and feathered friends. Find a gentle way to help these birds relocate to a more suitable home.

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGGING TIP #6 | check compatibility between rigging attachments and their respective capacities  

Rigging to the low steel and need maximum trim height? Using a beam clamp is a more practical alternative than rigging with wire rope slings when you have to get tight up to that beam. Remember to check for compatibility between rigging attachments and their respective capacities.

Hooks are designed to take load in the “saddle” or “bowl”. The safe working load of a hook can be severely reduced when loads are applied to the tip. While this example may or may not lead to a failure, it still begs the question of what other shortcuts or missteps may have been taken during this installation? Will that loose piece of sash cord get sucked into the hoist? Safe rigging is all about attention to detail.

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGGING TIP #8 | know your voltage setting 

Do you know which voltage setting your CM Lodestar is set for? It only takes a minute to pull the cap off and check. Most entertainment applications will use the low voltage option. Luckily, Lodestars are equipped for dual voltage options. 

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGGING TIP #9 | consider using clove hitches  entertainment industry rigging safety, check cables, hercules securing, lifting & rigging

Using a clove hitch on the chain, 6-12 inches below the hook, can make it much easier to clip into your rigging point. With one hand (or foot) on the rope, the other is free to complete the attachment. Also, there is no chance for the rope to get pinched between the hook and shackle. Always remember to back up that clove hitch with a half hitch on top to prevent roll-out.

Portable truss towers have become very popular in recent years. They are easy to erect and can be installed quickly with a small crew. Three important safety considerations for these systems are:

  1. Evaluation by an engineer for site-specific considerations and high wind action plans.
  2. Maintaining weather monitoring systems, so prompt action can be taken should inclement weather occur.
  3. Securing the load from swinging with proper rigging hardware. The lever hoists, in this example, are also being used to focus the speakers. 

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RIGGING TIP #11 | inspect your PPE before each use

The personal protective equipment we use is only effective if we inspect and care for it properly. Before putting on that harness or lanyard, take a moment to inspect all of the stitching, buckles, and attachments.

Make it a habit to do “buddy checks” with your co-workers too. A second set of eyes may see something yours did not. If it doesn’t look right, don’t use it.

Steve Norcross is a talented Territory Sales Manager from Sarnia, Ontario. Steve brings a wealth of experience with him from industrial backgrounds working on all sides—Read on to learn more about his role at Hercules SLR, where he’d like to travel with the company and his career path.

Steve Norcross, Territory Sales Manager: Tell us about your educational/professional background:

Well, professionally, I was a Branch Manager at an Industrial Sales firm for a little over 12 years—Before that, I worked in purchasing for 10 years.

Steve Norcross, Territory Sales Manager: Why did you decide to go into this industry? 

Simply—I was in the right place at the right time! Over 20 years ago a position opened up in the Industrial supply industry and I haven’t looked back. Like I mention above, I’ve changed my position within the industry, and that’s let me learn so much about how a business operates.

Steve Norcross, Territory Sales Manager: Can you tell us about your work experience before joining Hercules SLR? 

In terms of work I did before this role, as a Purchasing Manager I bought everything from toilet paper to tractor trailers—And prior to that I sold most of the same items!

My experience in purchasing helped me understand a lot about the supply chain, the product and how to sell. They’re both people-oriented—In both roles I had to develop relationships, which for me means I do what I say I’ll do, which helps build trust.

Steve Norcross, Territory Sales Manager: Why did you decide to work for Hercules SLR?

I was looking for a job, and I really sought after a position that let me interact with customers and solve problems. I had been behind a desk for awhile and wanted a change.

So far, I’ve travelled to Brampton, Ontario to take Inspection Training. This was a great experience and really helped narrow the learning curve—On-going training opportunities like this help me in my sales role, and really understand the service we sell.

Steve Norcross, Territory Sales Manager: Is there anywhere that you would like to travel to in the future with Hercules SLR?

I’d love to visit the other Ontario branches! It would be interesting to see how other branches in our region operate.

I’m proud to have accomplished Inspection and Fall Arrest training! Now, I’m a qualified Inspector—I have a certificate and everything!

WOMAN IN INDUSTRY, TASHA PETERS | Tell us about your educational or professional background & experience before joining Hercules SLR? 

I’m a graduate of the Social Service worker and Correctional Worker Program, and I’ve worked in sales and management positions for the last 12 years.

WOMAN IN INDUSTRY, TASHA PETERS | Why did you decide to work for Hercules SLR? 

I decided to work for Hercules SLR because there was opportunity to grow! I also admired their reputation in business, their company’s structure and I was personally so excited have a completely different challenge. 

WOMAN IN INDUSTRY, TASHA PETERS | Where have you traveled to during your time at Hercules SLR? 

I have not traveled with the company yet, but I’d love to visit the other Hercules SLR branches!

I look forward to visiting other locations and meeting mentors within the company—I’d love to visit our Head Office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and the other branches here in Ontario.

I love that each day’s a learning opportunity—No two days look exactly the same, so there’s always something new to experience! I also love that there’s so much diversity within the securing, lifting and rigging industry.

I don’t feel like I’m faced with challenges based on my gender. I feel like I’ve been on an even playing field with my male counterparts in every interaction and opportunity I’ve had at Hercules SLR so far.

My only advice to women starting out in the rigging industry is to be true to yourself, and face things head on.

We approach safety with everything we do, from how we inspect cranes to how we pull into our parking lot each morning (It’s true, we back in—It’s the safest way).  

It’s important to lead by example. Behaviour-based safety training has long-been used as a framework to build a safety culture. This approach says that human-behaviour is the main cause of workplace accidents, and to prevent workplace accidents, employees should tell supervisors and managers when unsafe behaviours take place, and discipline or reward them—And yes, while human error is up there on the list of reasons why, it’s also been proven that discipline alone and placing blame doesn’t actually make a workplace safer.

It’s much more effective to lead by example, ingrain safety in your daily actions and get feedback from coworkers and employees on the safety culture at your organization. To us, it’s important to know why employees work safe—Why do you want to go home at the end of each day? Whether it’s to spend time with family, play hockey or go ATVing, our safety culture lets us do what we love outside of work.

Women in Industry: Adriana Martin, Branch Manager Talks Securing & Safety in Sudbury

What’s it like to be a women in industry? You’re about to find out. 

We talk to Sudbury, Ontario Branch Manager, Adriana Martin about being a woman in the securing, rigging & lifting industry, her advice for young women hoping to work in an industrial environment and her tips to lead a team that works hard, and plays hard together.  

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, Adriana Martin: What’s your educational and professional background like? 

Interestingly enough, I went to five years of concurrent university to become a schoolteacher. I taught as a supply (substitute) teacher for a couple of years – I taught grades 3 through 10 before I decided to seek something outside my industry, and ended up in government at the Ministry of Government Services. After that, I worked at a crane service company for five years – I worked with parts and was Head Planner there, where I scheduled the technician’s work. 

5 years later, I was offered a job at Hercules SLR as a CSR and – took it, quite clearly! After my second child was born, I was offered the Branch Manager position when I came back from maternity leave. I stepped into a brand-new role when I returned, and everyone from the branch here in Sudbury, to the executive team at our Head Office has been extremely supportive and helpful with the transition. 

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, Adriana Martin: What excited you about working at Hercules    SLR?

I enjoyed my previous role as a Planner, and excelled in management. As a CSR at the time, I had my own role as Inside Salesperson, which excited me since I knew sales was my strength – I could perform to the best of my ability, and there was room to grow with the company. 

I was especially excited to get service flowing in Sudbury, because it was a huge opportunity but weren’t focused on it. Then, Sudbury had two service technicians but they didn’t have a full-time service department. Within months we had five service technicians, and were completing service calls daily.

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, Adriana Martin: What useful advice to lead a team do you have?

Transparency is the key to bring everything together. As a leader, I’ve found it important share important details with others, and my team appreciates being in-the-know. When the team’s on the same page, it’s easier for everyone to know what their expectations are. 

Sometimes, transparency can be uncomfortable but I value leading by example, with trust & integrity. I think having clear goals, and being open about the plan needed to achieve them helps our branch work seamlessly. 

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, Adriana Martin: How has mentorship has played a role in your career at Hercules SLR? 

Like I mentioned, I received so much support from the executive team when I stepped into the management role. In Sudbury, Kelly inspired me as a working mom who is tremendously good at her job. She was a huge support and made me realize, “If she can do it, I can do it!” 

That’s another thing that’s inspiring about work at Hercules SLR – there’s women in power here and it’s very motivating. I see successful examples of women with families at Hercules SLR, like Lisa Barkhouse, a manager who has overcame challenges and showed tremendous growth the entire time, or Ina, our Supply Chain Manager. I try to look for success, and emulate it. 

In a way, I find mentors everywhere at Hercules SLR. I don’t know every single answer, but I know who to ask to figure it out. Our individual experiences both strengthen us as a team, and help us move forward as a company. 

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, Adriana Martin: What’s something you’re most proud to have      accomplished during your career at Hercules SLR? 

I’m most proud to have my hard-work recognized, and gain the Branch Manager positon after two years. 

I’ve had experiences where you work hard, and you are good at your job, yet this is not when someone will pull you aside and tell you how great your work is – typically, you’re pulled aside when things are going poorly! It feels good to have my work acknowledged at Hercules SLR. 

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, Adriana Martin: Where have you traveled during your time at Hercules SLR, and where would you like to go? 

So far, I’ve been to Hercules SLR’s head office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and I’d love to go back! Even though it was cold (laughs), I’d love to see more of the city and explore more as a tourist. 

In the future I’d love to visit our other Ontario branches, in Sarnia, Hamilton and Brampton – especially because we work so closely already.

Each branch in Ontario focuses on a different aspect of the rigging industry. In Sudbury, most of our business centres on crane and equipment servicing. Specifically, we repair cranes and crane equipment, conduct inspections, help manage equipment with CertTracker, our management tool that lets clients easily sort assets and provide equipment for cranes and other hoisting equipment. 

Service is Sudbury’s strength, and each branch masters something different which helps us grow and support each other. We work as a team here – it’s not branch against branch, it’s Team Ontario. 

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, Adriana Martin: What do you enjoy most about the securing,  rigging & lifting industry?

Honestly, overcoming challenges as a woman in this industry. Sometimes men don’t take me seriously or realize I’m well-informed. We have three women in our Sudbury branch alone! Changing this mindset is something I enjoy.

For example, sometimes I’ll answer our phone and the person will ask to speak with the ‘person in charge’, not knowing it’s me! I’m always able to answer their questions and concerns, and am able to prove to them that women in industry are able to run the show. Even though it can be frustrating, it’s hugely rewarding. 

WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, Adriana Martin: Finally, what career advice do you have for young women in industry working in an industrial environment, or the trades? 

It might sound like a cliché, but never give up and always do your best. You don’t always know the answer, but you can always find it. 

Don’t let people’s negative words get to you. There can be discouraging talk from outside sources, and if you take it seriously, can be demotivating. Stay positive, focus and push forward and you’ll reach your goals. When confronted with negative words, remind yourself that it’s their problem, not yours
