DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
Hercules SLR offers destructive testing for rigging equipment. Destructive testing requires a inspector to a piece of equipment, product or material with a weight or force at or above its WLL—this finds the point at which the equipment fails.
What does destructive testing look like? Watch a SlingMaster synthetic sling manufactured, then tested to its failure here.
NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING / INSPECTIONS
Non-destructive testing or inspections, commonly known as NDT, is a process used to detect faults or weak points in a material (like metal, for example) or equipment without compromising its integrity. NDT is beneficial as it allows the equipment to be inspected, then repaired or put out of service depending on the results.
Hercules SLR offers the following non-destructive inspections:
- Magnetic Particle (MPI)
- Liquid Penetrant (LPI)
- Proof-Loading
INSPECTIONS—STANDARDS
In Canada, the rigging industry recognizes the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards for securing, rigging and lifting industries. Standard ASME B30.9 applies to wire rope slings, chain slings, web slings or synthetic slings and round slings. ASME B30.20 applies to below the hook lifting devices like spreader bars, spreader beams, lifting magnets, vacuum lifters, tirfors, lever hoists (pullers), manual hoists (chain fall), and plate clamps.
Further provincial regulations may apply. Be sure to read the manufacturer label, instructions and warnings for further safety and inspection guidelines.
