HOW TO USE PLATE CLAMPS SAFELY

HOW TO USE PLATE CLAMPS SAFELY

How should you use plate clamps, or grabs safely? First of all, you should always follow the manufacturer recommendations and other provincial or federal regulations. In addition to also following these guidelines, try this to use plate clamps safely:

  •  Choose the right plate clamp for the job, whether this is vertical, horizontal or universal lifting, and are rated for the plate thickness they’re designed to fit. If using a vertical plate clamp, be sure to equip with a locking device to prevent the clamp loosening, use horizontal plate clamps in pairs.
  • If you must use a tag line, attach to the clamp before the lifting plate—Be sure to lock the clamp.
  • Check for welding defects, fractures and other abnormalities (Internally and externally).
  • Be sure to check and measure the throat width—When using zero grip, the cam should be in full contact with the pad. If the measurement is at the base where the pad’s located is larger than the top, the plate clamp body has been overloaded. If this happens, remove and tag the defective clamp and remove from service.
  • Check pin holes for wear & tear—To check the pins internally, soak in de-greasing solvent to remove dirt & grease.Remove body pins/bolts and slide out the internal mechanism, check each body pin or bolt for wear or bending due to overloading and check each spacer, rivet, bolt or internal part for play or wear. Remove from service and replace any word or defective part.
