Inspection Notice: MSA PFL/SRL Rivets

MSA is issuing an Inspection Notice to inform you they have identified isolated instances of unflared top eyelet rivets in MSA V-Edge 2.4m Twin Leg Cable PFL. MSA has not received any reports of injuries associated with this condition.  However, we are requesting that you perform the inspection outlined in this notice.

An unflared top eyelet rivet may eventually begin to dislodge from the PFL. If the rivet begins to dislodge from the PFL, the PFL may not arrest a fall.

In a review of all riveted connections on PFLs and SRLs, MSA has identified that the field inspections in the following table are to be performed.

Product (See Appendix A* for Part Number list)

Rivet(s) to Inspect (See “Inspection Instructions” section for inspection details) Number of Rivets per PFL/SRL Assembly (See Appendix B* for Figures showing Rivet Locations)
2.4m V-Edge Twin Leg Cable PFL Top Eyelet 2
2.4m V-Edge Twin Leg Cable PFL Casing 8
2.4m V-Edge Single Leg Cable PFL Top Eyelet 1
2.4m V-Edge Single Leg Cable PFL Casing 4
2.7m V-Edge Twin Leg Cable PFL Top Eyelet 2
2.7m V-Edge Twin Leg Cable PFL Casing 8
2.7m V-Edge Single Leg Cable PFL Top Eyelet 1
2.7m V-Edge Single Leg Cable PFL Casing 4
6m V-Edge Cable SRL Shock Pack 2

* Appendix A and Appendix B can be found in the attached Inspection Notice.

MSA is committed to safety and quality and has implemented increased inspection and quality controls to prevent this condition in the future.

MSA is advising all customers to inspect the rivets listed in Table 1.  Inspect per the Instructions in this Notice.  Remove from service any PFL or SRL that does not pass the inspection.

Inspection Instructions

Perform the following inspection to determine whether your PFL or SRL needs to be taken out of service.  Please reference Appendix B in the attached Inspection Notice for assistance in locating each type of rivet.

Top Eyelet Rivets

  1. Place the PFL on a flat surface so that there is not a load on the top eyelet rivet.
  2. Attempt to remove the top eyelet rivet from the eyelet by pushing the rivet.
  3. Attempt to remove the top eyelet rivet from the eyelet by pulling on the rivet.

Casing Rivets

  1. Hold or suspend the PFL such it does not make contact with a surface that would prevent movement of the casing rivets.
  2. Attempt to remove the casing rivets by pushing the rivets.
  3. Attempt to remove the casing rivets by pulling on the rivets.

Shock Pack Rivets

  1. Hold the SRL shock pack such that the shock pack does not make contact with a surface that would prevent movement of the shock pack rivets.
  2. Attempt to remove the shock pack rivets by pushing the rivets.
  3. Attempt to remove the shock pack rivets by pulling on the rivets.

Some small back and forth movement of the rivets is to be expected while pushing or pulling. If any of the rivets are able to be removed from the PFL/SRL, remove the PFL/SRL from service.

Note: If there is a green dot on your PFL/SRL box label or there is a green dot on the end of your rivets, it has already been inspected by MSA and has been determined to be acceptable. No further inspection on your part is necessary.

Replacing Affected PFLs and SRLs

If there is any question about the results of the inspection, remove the PFL/SRL from service and contact Hercules SLR for a replacement PFL and/or SRL.

MSA Press Release – New Jet Style Firefighter Helmet

New “Jet-Style” Firefighter Helmet from MSA Now Certified to NFPA Performance Standards

Shipments of New Helmet to Begin Immediately

PITTSBURGH, September 26, 2018 – Global safety equipment manufacturer MSA Safety
Incorporated (NYSE: MSA) today announced that its new jet-style fire helmet, called the Cairns®
XF1, has received third-party certification as compliant to the 2018 edition of the National Fire
Protection Association’s (NFPA) 1971 performance standards for structural firefighting. It is also
certified as compliant to the 2013 edition of the NFPA’s 1951 performance standards for
technical rescue. With this certification, MSA can begin shipping orders for the Cairns XF1
immediately.

The Cairns XF1, which was previewed in April at the Fire Department Instructor’s
Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis, Ind., represents a new addition to the MSA firefighter helmet
line. The helmet, which resembles a firefighter jet pilot helmet, represents a significant design
departure from the “brim-style” helmet traditionally preferred by North American firefighters. The
new style delivers enhanced technology integration while maintaining the quality, durability, and
safety performance firefighters have come to expect from MSA’s Cairns brand.

The XF1 helmet incorporates a number of optional user features, which include a
protective visor, an integrated communication system and LED lights that, because of their
placement on either side of the helmet, rather than at the top of the head, significantly improve
visibility without blinding others on scene.

Additionally, and like all other Cairns helmet models, the XF1’s soft goods are removable,
washable and replaceable – all without requiring the use of tools – which will help firefighters
comply with various cancer prevention directives published by leading agencies like the
Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN).

Jason Traynor, MSA’s General Manager for Global Respiratory Protection and Fire
Helmets, explained that the introduction of MSA’s newest jet-style helmet is not meant to replace
any of the traditional helmet models the company currently manufactures, but rather serve as
another option when choosing a fire helmet.

“Choosing a fire helmet is a very personal decision. It’s an icon of the profession and, for
that reason, it represents a source of pride for many firefighters. And that’s why we solicited
feedback from hundreds of firefighters throughout the design process. From these Voice-of Customer
conversations, we knew the time was right to bring a jet-style fire helmet to the North
American fire service market,” commented Mr. Traynor.

“At MSA, we’re dedicated to providing firefighters with the latest technology to help protect
them when lives are on the line,” Mr. Traynor continued. “The Cairns XF1 looks entirely different
than the ‘traditional’ brim-style helmet that U.S. firefighters wear today. And that’s the point. The
Cairns XF1 represents a new and now NFPA compliant option that wasn’t previously available.
As the global leader in fire helmets, we’re excited about the opportunities this helmet will bring to
the possibility of interconnected personal protective equipment.”

MSA Safety – New V-Series Energy-Absorbing Lanyards

MSA-Energy-Absorbing-Lanyards

Effective immediately, (Aug 16, 2018) new MSA CSA Z259.11-17 V-Series Energy-Absorbing Lanyards are replacing the Workman® and Sure-Stop® Energy-Absorbing Lanyards.

The V-Series Lanyard is the latest addition to the MSA V-Series family of Fall Protection products.  With its new look, smaller energy absorber, and improved label protection, the transition from older styles of lanyards will be an easy choice.

Due to the release of the new CSA Z259.11-17 standard and the availability of the new V-Series lanyard family, MSA is officially discontinuing the CSA Workman and Sure-Stop Energy-Absorbing Lanyards effective immediately.  While a limited amount of inventory remains available, we ask that you quickly embrace the new and improved V-Series offering for a seamless transition.

Please note that the energy absorbing lanyards manufactured to the current CSA standard may still be used until their useful life expires which is at the discretion of a competent person inspection.  At the time of replacement, energy-absorbing lanyards labeled to the new CSA Z259.11-17 standard should be implemented.

It is important to note that the new CSA standard revision removed the E4 and E6 energy absorber classifications.  For reference, new MSA lanyards will be grouped into the following classifications:

  • LW CSA for users 50 kg – 105 kg (110 lbs – 230 lbs)
  • CSA for users 68 kg – 140 kg (150 lbs – 310 lbs); and
  • HW CSA for users 140 kg – 175 kg (310 lbs – 386 lbs)

While most users will fit within the “CSA” category of 68 – 140 kg (150 lbs – 310 lbs), please note this change when selecting the most appropriate lanyard for users.

For reference, please review the user capacity chart shown on the attached V-Series Energy-Absorbing Lanyards Conversion Guide.
