The Hercules Team During COVID-19| #HercAtWork #HercAtHome

The entire world has felt the effects of COVID-19, all in different ways than others. The Hercules Group of Companies has remained open during this time providing uninterrupted & safe customer service to Canada’s vital essential services.

Although we have remained open, business has most certainly not been as normal. We’ve been working very hard to take special measures to ensure the health and well-being of our employees, customers, and community while adhering to provincial guidelines. These measures are detailed here.

This has meant changing up the ways we do things – with some employees shifting to work from home while others on-site made changes to their work routine and procedure to allow for social distancing. Personal time at home also took a shift, just like everyone else!

These unprecedented times have been tough for many people. But the Hercules Group of Company has been holding on and trying our hardest to make the absolute best of the situation and changing routines. We’ve been sharing some of the highlights over on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin) but thought it would be fun to compile them all together here.

Here are some of the bright moments our team has shared with us during this time – Because we all need to be reminded to reflect on and relish the good:

1. Stuck-at-Home Entertainment

At work and at home our Hercules team, like everyone else, helped to flatten the curve and had to find all sorts of creative ways to entertain themselves. Here’s what Jeff Sheehan our Branch Manager from Newfoundland and his family got up to. T-shirt making, face/beard painting, and indoor hockey capers!

2. Creative Outlets

Many of our Hercules Team transitioned to working from home, and kept their sanity by finding different outlets for their creativity! These cute wood paintings were created by Hercules SLR National Program Manager, Lisa Barkhouse.

3. Work-From-Home Buddies

Our Hercules SLR Branch Manager in BC, Deanna MacDonald, shared this funny #HercAtHome moment she had with her son, Jaxton.

4. Sending Love to Healthcare Heros

Our Branch Manager Deanna in Langely BC, decided to show some love in her front window – Showing that all of our hearts, collectively go out to every healthcare and front line worker during this difficult time.

5. Working with Fur-Babies

Our furry friends had to adjust as much us, as many of them we not used to having us around all day. These two beauties are the fur babies of our VP of Sales and Operations Rose Efford.

6. Taking on Projects

Our National Program Manager Lisa Barkhouse kept herself busy building a new road on her property – Now that’s a way to keep busy!

7. Diving into Hobbies

Many of us took this time as an opportunity to dive into hobbies or pick up a new one! Our CSR in Langely BC, Paula Terrell did some awesome planting projects!

8. Keeping Active With the Family

This has been a time to cherish family, whether remotely or in person, it’s been so important we all remain connected. This is our Sudbury Territory Sales Manager Kelly having some fun with her family and keeping the Hercules Brand strong with those awesome toques!

9. Father-Son Projects

Our Hercules MMS Machinist Gregg Kinsman and his son Gage made this awesome project with oodles of creativity!

10. Social-Distanced Team Lunches

At Hercules SLR Brampton the distance may have changed but their team spirit is stronger than ever! They found ways to adapt to the current situation without having to give up team activities. These photos show how they re-organized their team lunch so they could still enjoy some Popeyes together.

11. Remote Family Coffee Dates

Our Service Supervisor, Arthur Lewis shared this moment where he was able to have a coffee with his daughter and granddaughters before work even though they have had to social distance from each other – How sweet!

Hercules SLR is proud to be an essential service in these unprecedented times. We remain open, while respecting the emergency measures put in place by our provincial governments and health advice.

We have set up specific drop-off and pick-up points in-store and you can call us ahead of time to make sure everything is ready before your arrival. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People | #HercAtWork

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

At Hercules Group of Companies, we know the importance of long-term learning and growth. We’re constantly working to provide opportunities for our employees to improve their skills and capabilities because we hire and keep the best. We place a strong emphasis on formal leadership & technical skills training, because we know it’s an essential stepping stone for our workforce, and the company as a whole, to be its best.

7 HABITS: THE BEGINNING

At the beginning of 2019, we circulated a Values and Attitude survey to gauge our employees’ needs and feelings for the company, which helps us understand the needs of the company and our teams. From this survey, we learned Hercules GoC needed an effective tool to support our leaders so they have the tools they need to achieve results & properly lead our teams.

Outside Sales and Account Manager, Brad Dalton, “in the moment” with his daughter.

To accomplish this goal, we chose Franklin Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People—It provides a fantastic framework that help’s with all aspects of our busy lives, not just inside of the office. I think many of us can relate to stresses from taking work home with us, and vice-versa. In a leadership position, you can’t be the best mentor you can be if you’re struggling on your own day-to-day. You can’t pour from an empty cup!

What’s it like to pour from an empty cup? Here’s what our Outside Sales and Account Manager, Brad Dalton had to say about struggling to find work-life balance—”Before the course I used to bring work home with me at times, which prevented me from being the best dad and spouse I could, AND SHOULD be. Since taking the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People course, and applying all 7 habits, I’ve been able to turn the switch off when I walk in the house, and really live in the moment. I act different, I think different, and I’m always striving to improve home life for our kids. I’ve been doing more activities with them and can’t stress enough how I’ve learned to appreciate and be mindful of my time. It’s opened my eyes and given me a renewed perspective on how lucky I am.”

7 HABITS: THE EXPERIENCE

Hercules Group of Companies leaders completed 2 rounds of this program. The first focused on learning the 7 Habits which are: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win/Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw.

What did leaders at Hercules GoC do to really learn and apply these habits? Leader’s were inspired by videos of other companies success & experience using the 7 Habits, they shared meaningful discussion and participated in group & role-playing activities like the “Big Rocks” exercise. What on Earth is a ‘big rock’ other than a hunk of minerals? Discover what ‘big rocks’ are in the video below!

7 HABITS: IN PRACTICE

franklin covey 7 habits of highly effective people quotes habit 6 synergy
Habit 6: Synergize, the principle of creative cooperation.

Hercules SLR Branch Manager from Langley BC, Deanna MacDonald, shared some of these habits with her team as she implemented them. One team member shared that they’ve taped this habit to their computer, “Be synergistic with yourself. Don’t take insults personally, sidestep negative energy, and look for the good in others. You can utilize that good—As different as it may be—To improve your point of view and enlarge your perspective.” They added, “I have felt this way a lot and reading this really helps me to not take everything personally. Sometimes other people and myself included, could be having a bad day and may come across in the wrong way. I had this experience recently only to realize that the other person was having a bad day!” -- A great perspective to take away from the 7 Habits!

The second round was all about taking what was learned and implementing it as leaders! They continued on to meet in small groups on a bi-weekly basis following the training, so that the meaningful discussion could continue as they worked through the remainder of the program and read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People book.

How have the 7 Habits helped Hercules’ Financial Analyst, Angela Nguyen? She shared how the 7 Habits program has affected her day-to-day life, and says, “It did not happen right away after the course, but with continuous practice, group discussions and my beloved colleagues working as my accountability partners, I feel that positive change is happening to me and I gradually feel stronger and closer to a better version of myself. I also see people and circumstances through a different and more positive angle which urges me to take steps and reflect again and again to better understand, think win-win and synergize with people including colleagues, stakeholders at work and family members at home.”

7 HABITS: THINKING & LIVING WIN-WIN

Now that we’ve seen the positive affects the 7 Habits program has had on the everyday lives of Hercules Group of Companies leaders—We’re incredibly excited to announce we’ll be rolling it out to all staff! Over the course of 4 months, Hercules Group of Companies leaders will share what they’ve learned with the rest of the company as we share & guide them through all 7 habits of highly effective people, and we’re talking the talk and walking the walk—We’re sharing how their managers have been implementing those habits into their daily lives and making big changes.

We can’t wait to see how the 7 Habits training continues to impact Hercules Group of Companies—This is one of many steps forward in our never-ending learning journey. We’re confident it’ll result in us serving customers & clients better, but also help us become better family members, friends, neighbours and peers—Which is just as valuable & important to Hercules Group of Companies.

Why Workplace Culture Matters | #HercAtWork

why workplace culture matters

FUN AT WORK: WHY WORKPLACE CULTURE MATTERS

Fun at work is important, and this is one of the reasons why workplace culture matters — Seriously. We’ve went over our passion for safety before, but we’re also passionate about fun.

Why is fun important? Well, an article from Monster states that a focus on happiness at work not only leads to a more positive workforce, but a better bottom-line, too.

Studies found organizations that had fun and were allowed to be silly were linked to higher employee engagement, retention and profitability. Another study completed by the University of Warwick found that happier employees put in more effort, and were more productive by 12%, and in some cases even 20% more productive.

There are more abstract benefits that show why fun workplace culture matters, too—Workplaces that allow employees to have fun also allow them to be more creative, which often leads to employees to find unique solutions to organizational problems.

Fun really is a win-win situation for employers, managers and employees.

Under Construction: Building Safety Culture at Hercules SLR

safety culture at hercules slr

Hercules SLR has been building a safety culture for over 45 years—Yes, we literally got here by playing it safe.

When it comes to rigging, Hercules SLR does it all, and we does it safely. How do we build a safety culture? Read on to learn how we make safety cool, (really).

SAFETY CULTURE | why we’re proud

We approach safety with everything we do, from how we inspect cranes to how we pull into our parking lot each morning (It’s true, we back in—It’s the safest way).

It’s important to lead by example. Behaviour-based safety training has long-been used as a framework to build a safety culture. This approach says that human-behaviour is the main cause of workplace accidents, and to prevent workplace accidents, employees should tell supervisors and managers when unsafe behaviours take place, and discipline or reward them—And yes, while human error is up there on the list of reasons why, it’s also been proven that discipline alone and placing blame doesn’t actually make a workplace safer.

It’s much more effective to lead by example, ingrain safety in your daily actions and get feedback from coworkers and employees on the safety culture at your organization. To us, it’s important to know why employees work safe—Why do you want to go home at the end of each day? Whether it’s to spend time with family, play hockey or go ATVing, our safety culture lets us do what we love outside of work.

SAFETY CULTURE | leading by example

We provide training and on-going learning opportunities for our employees—These include:

  • Support and training for all branches across Canada by our in-house trainer, Lisa Barkhouse
  • Rich online resource library (powerpoints, manuals & video)
  • Opportunities for external training and certifications
  • The Hercules Training Academy—our cutting-edge training academy is equipped with a crane that supports 10-tonnes, smaller gantry cranes and materials to lift and rig you’ll actually encounter on-site

Overall, Canadian workplaces lack on-the-job training, and Hercules SLR is passionate about providing on-the-job training. We know it’s important to give our employees the skills they need to be safe.

SAFETY CULTURE | health, safety & life at Hercules SLR

Health and safety go hand-in-hand. How does Hercules SLR make sure we support a healthy lifestyle? We:

  • Offer incentives for employees to get out and get moving
  • Benefits comparable to industry standards
  • Social outings and team-building activities

We’re also proud of our diverse workforce. We have staff hailing from China to England—And Canada, of course.

What else is great about work at Herc? There’s:

  • Strong sense of teamwork
  • Management team that recognizes individual achievements you reach and exceed
  • Bonuses and sales incentives for our team of Customer Service Representative’s (CSR’s) and salespeople
  • Exciting growth opportunities for those who are eager to learn—For example, of one our inspectors expressed interest in gaining more certification, and we made it happen for her.

SAFETY CULTURE | is work at Hercules SLR right for you?

Is #HercAtWork right for you? If you’re:

  • Engaged
