Shock cord is characterized by an elastic core surrounded by a polypropylene, nylon or polyester rope sheath. This construction allows the rope to stretch while remaining resistant to fraying and damage from exposure to the elements.
Shock cord is most commonly used in the transportation industry because its elasticity and capacity for shock absorption make it perfect for securing cargo. This is because while the inner elastic core of shock cord stretches, the outer layer simply elongates, squeezing around the core and protecting it.
