Spotlight on Stephen Lindsay: The Travelling Machinist at Hercules MMS
In this series, we want to take some time to get to know the incredibly talented and devoted machinists that bring years of expertise to Hercules MMS. In today’s blog, let’s learn a bit about Stephen Lindsay!
Since 1975, Hercules MMS (formerly Fundy Grinding) has been providing customers with quality machining and millwright services. Over time, the company has grown exponentially from providing these services locally to working across Canada and around the globe.
How long have you been in the machining/millwright industry?
37 Years.
Where are you originally from?
Born and raised in Truro, Nova Scotia.
How did you get started in the industry or what made you decide to get into this industry?
When I graduated high school I originally wanted to be a mechanic, but the class for that program was full for the following year. I had an instructor suggest I check out the machinist trade, which I did and found very interesting – the rest is history!
Tell us about your educational background:
I have my grade 12 and 2-year machinist course.
What’s your favourite part about working in this industry?
My favourite part about working in this industry is that I find my work very challenging, interesting and rewarding.
Can you tell us about your work experience before joining Hercules?
I’ve worked in two other repair shops previously, the last position I held was in a division of a hydraulic repair shop. I managed for 10 years at that organization before moving on to Hercules MMS!
What made you decide to join Hercules?
I was personally approached by the former owner of then, Fundy Grinding!
Do you have any advice for a young person wanting to get into the industry?
Although it is a very rewarding trade, you will face many challenges. It’s not for the faint-hearted! You need to be able to confidently make decisions and complete jobs on your own.
Is there anything about your experience in the industry you’d like to share?
I have been fortunate to work as part of the onsite team which has enabled me to travel a lot with my work. I’ve completed work in every Canadian province as well as Trinidad, The United States, and several jobs in Hong Kong!
